Good husband- 'Suami baik'

I got this recently from one of my mails.
Just thought want to share it out..;)
And, it's in Malay language..

“Berapa harga nya?”
“Cuma $1500.00 aje”
“O.K, belilah kalau memang awak dah suka sangat”
“Ahhh thanks bang dan tadi sebelum datang sini sayang ada singgah di Cycle & Carriage dan tengok Mercedes model terbaru 2001. Sayang suka kat satu model tu. Dan sayang dah bincang dengan jurujualnya dan dia setuju nak bagi good price… lagipun elok juga kita tukarkan dengan BMW yang kita beli tahun lepas tu..”
“Berapa harga yang dia bagi?”
“Cuma $280,000… “
“O.k tapi pastikan harga tu dah on the road.”
“Great!, before we hang up, ada satu perkara lagi… “
“Apa?”
“Eloklah kalau macam tu, confirm cepat sebelum orang lain beli, tapi cuba dapatkan harga $700,000. OK?”
“OK, abang sayang, terima kasih bang, kita jumpa malam nanti ye!! I Love You !!!”
“Bye… I Love you too… “

What hurts most..

My last Penang fieldtrip for this year was the most enlightening one.

It was sort of painful too.

We had visited a hydrocephalic baby. It's the last birth defect case that I had visited for my current job.
I did not capture her photo but I found a substitute from here.

(from http://www.lucinafoundation.org/assets/hydrocephalus.jpg)

The history of this baby is still unknown. It could possibly due to the solvent exposure near her living place released by printing industries. According to my supervisor, her survival rate is low. Her spine was malformed.
She had several diagnoses, including kidney problems.
At such a tender age of six months plus, and she is suffering from all these.
Why????

It really hurts to see such a beautiful and cute baby to be suffering from this.
She is a really cheerful girl.
Though she's suffering in silence.
When we played with her, she would smile gleefully. Her eyes would try to turn left and right to capture our voices.
Innocently, she'd be smiling.
A really smart baby- I would say.

But we could not show our empathy much, not right in front of her mother.
And I really felt helpless.
What hurts most- is when you can't do anything, and anything at all.

Passed-by opportunity

I am so inclined to go!
But I'm not going, I think.

SIgh

What a great opportunity to be wasted.

I am not talking about myself- because I've decided. Yes I must decide it to be like this.
I am referring to someone else.
----- Why can't you just analyse closely?-----
----- Why don't you just try it?--------
----- It will bring no harm at all!-----

The policy is changing already. If you don't try it, you'd never know! Is it because of your back-in-school mentality?

It's so wasted that you are not going to accept it.
Really, this is such a great opportunity!!

And it's really time to crawl out of your shell.
Stubbornness is one of the greatest enemies in us.
IF everyone is S-M-A-R-T, there will be PERFECT PEOPLE in this world.

Come on, let's face the reality.
Another two years will bring you to nowhere, but this definitely will!
But I cannot give you 100% assurance because I won't be here to experience it.
But I know, if I were you, I will. I will definitely go for it!!

Sigh.

Some people just do not know how to appreciate valuable chances that come by.
And some never will..

Perhaps, you're afraid.
Or you are just too proud to admit it,
Or, you are just so 'kiasu',
Or, you're just too ignorant on this,
Or, you're just too rigid.

Or whatever:(

You should know that extreme rigidness is also another weaknesses in ourselves.

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Should I?

Should I let it go?
And wait?

Or should I grab the chance?
And be bold?

Should I adapt to the changes that I anticipate?
Or should I change?

If I don't, will I regret?
Again?

But, is it worth it?

Which route should I choose?
Why is it so hard for me to do it?

I really don't know what am I thinking at times..

But I'm afraid that i will regret it, a-g-a-i-n.

So long~~

Nostalgia

I went to UPM today to get some documents done.

Somehow, I felt really nostalgic.

Which is really weird, because I was there barely a month ago.

And it drizzled for a short moment..

I remember looking up the lamp posts when it was drizzling at night, years ago at the same spot.
The raindrops sparkled like snow flakes.
And accompanied by the serene rhythm of the night..

And when it drizzled momentarily at the stadium during the fireworks..
During the beautiful, unforgettable closing ceremony..
When we were standing in the middle of the field with the fireworks right on top of us..

Missed those moments.

Port Dickson trip

Basically, it was a short trip. And a hot one too.
Not much changes observed my last trip a few months back.
However, the seafood at Port Dickson Seafood Restaurant was really bad. We vowed never to go there again. I wonder how they could have such a lousy chef. We should have gone to eat somewhere else. Will never set foot in this restaurant, ever again.

Will have to compare my looks after moving on to new life next year. Hopefully better :P

Climate change

Have you realised that the current weather is unpredictable?

The severity of extremes- with floods, earthquakes, storms, heavy precipitations and sudden downpour? Or the extremes in hot weather? When you had sweaty days if you're not in an air-conditioned room?

It's no longer as humid as we've thought of.

Why?
Human factor is the main reason. Humans are selfish. Because of greed, the environment becomes the victim. And this ensued in further sufferings by the later generations.

Air pollution caused by developments have caused global warming, and resulting in climate change. The greenhouse gases such as CO2, NO2, SO2, CO and etc trap dust and heat. This resulted in the slow disbursement of heat back from earth to the atmosphere.

Ozone thinning had inevitably 'helped' in the increase of earth's temperature as more heat is shone directly onto earth. As you know, Malaysia is a tropical country that receives large amount of sunlight. This thus, causing us to receive more heat. And yes, darker skin. Sigh..

In fact, most of the factors that contributes to climate change is due to humans' actions. Natural factors like volcanoes, strong winds and strong downpour are due to natural causes, but human factors do play a role in changing the weather conditions.

What can be done?
The two major steps are mitigation and adaptation.

Mitigation plans are held to save us when some uneventful events takes place- such as epidemics and so on.

As for adaptation, I really wonder on this- how far could we adapt?
With the hot weather, falling sick is like a norm for the society. And it's like getting harder to fight the diseases. A common example would be the influenza. The avian influenza is striking more easily. Sigh.. (again)

The impacts from climate change cover:
1. Increase in diseases- such as dengue. The changes in weather/ precipitation could have resulted in a change of temperature. Unfortunately, it's global warming that I'm talking about. An increase in temperature could have encouraged the growth of pathogen (as it is closer to their optimum temperature).

2. Shortage of water- especially drinking water. Why? As the icebergs melt due to global warming, sea water will rise. This resulted in flooding freshwater reserves and thus, less reserves for us. Please do not forget that there's an increase of human population exponentially.

3. Food security- when diseases strike, when accidents happen, when food shortage takes place, when population is growing so fast.....people could have gone to war just for food and water.

4. Changes in terms of health aspects. The mortality would have increased. The more vulnerable group such as children, sick and elderly people could be affected more easily than ever.

5. Economic impacts- when things are in a haywire, only the more affluent group would survive as they can cope with higher prices of commodities sold. How about the poorer group?

6. Social impacts- Higher costs of livings would eventually lead to a decrease in moral. Perhaps, if there's no restrictions in laws and security, more robberies will take place.

In fact, there are many more other impacts that could have arisen.

Ways to help our beloved Mother Nature? Each of us should practice these, at least these..

1. Use less air-conditioners- if without air-conds you'd feel like dying, please turn on the air-conds to a slightly higher temperature so that it's less cold. 22-26 degree Celsius should be comfortable enough.

2. Produce less affluent- especially plastic-made products. It is less biodegradable (for some that are biodegradable).

3. Save water consumption- for example, please don't wash your cars so often. It's really a huge waste of fresh water!

4. Use less energy- save electricity, petrol and so on.

5. Take less flights- because planes consume lots of fuel and the fuel by-products such as carbon dioxide are released exceptionally high to the atmosphere.

6. Reduce unplanned urbanisations.

7. Produce less pollutants to the environment.

An old adage says that- if a frog is placed into a pot of boiling water, the frog would jump out immediately. However, if the frog is placed in a pot of room temperature water and heated slowly, the frog would die eventually.

We are the frog in a heating pot of water, if we don't act fast to save our beloved earth.

Penang 5th trip

My 28th-31st October trip..

Second and third picture were taken at Hospital Balik Pulau, Pulau Pinang.
The cactus is nice isn't it? It looked like some plant in a dessert.
But, it was really hot!

They were having a Hari Raya open house and we were invited!
I'm really impressed by their friendliness.
Took rendang ayam (really nice!!) with nasi pulut from lemang. Was eating it with my boss so I did not capture the food that I took:P

Inspiration

I can't believe that this is already another week!
Frankly, I've been anticipating it because I have no laptop with me for my field trip this week.

So bored!! Couldn't access anything after work. All I could do was to watch TV and some movies and read up some journals.

Yesterday I went out with a chemist and his wife. Well, my boss sends samples for testing to his laboratory and both of them treated me for my dinner at New Park World. Thank you Mr and Mrs Teoh!

Nice char koay teow and ice kacang..hehe..with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

But err, I did not capture any pictures. Tell me, how do you want to capture pictures in front of a big boss and his wife?;)

I was pretty pleased to be able to meet them up. It was purely on coincidence. I was supposed to send them samples for water and soil testings so they came to the hotel to pick it up. And, out of their kindness and friendliness, I was treated! Hehe..
But the main story was not on the treats-lah. Coz small matters only. The big news is that they gave me some good tips for my next Singapore stay. Where to stay, where to eat, where can my parents stay and so on.. :D

Their daughters have excellent academics and sports records. I was truly amazed listening to their eldest daughter's story, who went to Singapore (NUS also) for Asean scholarship, offered scholarships and even Harvard university offered her without any application! Then, she got various gold medals in sports and research. Another one is a lawyer. WOW..they had truly inspired me:P

Feel proud for them (though I do not have any linkages to them at all! LOL)

And I was really inspired:)

Thank you!!

No matter what...

No matter what they teach us,
No matter what they do....
lalalalalalala...

oops, getting out of the topic with this favourite song in my mind:P

No matter what my life going to be in future- I still wonder what would I be in 10 years' time.

One of my friend told me that she wanted to be a rich man's wife,
Another friend told me the same..
And so is another one.
Someone else told me she wanted to be the one ordering other people and become a top managerial person.
While another one told me that she wanted to be famous.
Someone else told me that he couldn't imagined how life going to be with his hatred towards his current studies (and I could not imagine either how many people would be suffering under his treatments- scary!)
Another one told me that he will just go on with life.
Some others told me they have not thought of it yet.
And few friends of mine want to get hold to someone right now.
Well, as for me?

No matter what that happens, I hope I will lead a more satisfying life than today.
See the improvements and less busier lives of my parents', get a secure job, a very very nice hubby, happy lives (okay, acceptable with occasional different moments especially with active kids around..LOL), nice food to eat, nice place to stay, financial security, great vacations around the globe, made many differences/ improvements in health and mankind, hmmm....

what else?

Still thinking.

Though I feel very thankful right now.. *lalalalala- with that song in my mind*

Morning 'sickness'

yes yes..morning 'sickness'
But it's not that sickness on pregnancy and dizziness and nausea...
It's caused by work and workplace.

This is the 'sickness' that I got from being blamed when the person who is guilty is pushing it on me.

Of course I defended myself. And I'm happy that I shooted her back.
But I still failed to control myself from being angered by her at that particular moment. Low EQ I supposed. sigh.

So irresponsible, slow and egoistic. If she's not happy working here, she could have just left to somewhere heavenly where she waits for money at the end of the month deposited into her accounts while she shakes her leg and open her mouth for people to feed. In addition, this 'auntie/ mak cik' really tarnished her whole office's community image.

In which, her office community has been the place we try to avoid and never get near because of the status.

*shake shake head*

sigh.

You'll never improve. That's a hard fact.

Irritated

Got real irritated at times. real @#$% irritated, especially when you're in a good mood and some !@#$% spoil the whole good mood.

Wonder what are friends for?
To envy? To irritate? Or to let you down? especially at times you want to share a story with someone aka friend.

Am thankful for people who appreciate friends, at least they do.
Am grateful for people that have good intentions.
Am happy to have friends that share the same pain and joy.

But real disgusted by people who just know how to take advantages.
And irritated by people who are just so selfish, calculative and so fake. That is so UNREAL!

Anyway, a BIG thank you to ALL for creating ups and downs in my life!

Tagged. 'thanks!'

RULE: Do it. And duplicate it to 6 other people. That also means tag 'em! Haha.

1. If your lover betrayed you, what will your reaction be?
I will never forgive him..i think

2. If you can have a dream to come true, what would it be?
I want to migrate to NZ or Aussie!! Or at least have a short stay there!

3. Whose butt would you like to kick?
My doggie’s..pat la of coz, especially when he behaves badly

4. What would you do with a billion dollars?
Help those that are close to me to settle their debts. Then, do charities, help animal shelter homes, help to reduce uncontrolled populations by sponsoring those operations needed. Of course, I’ll invest some $$, so that my $$ can last longer and longer.. Not forgetting also, I’ll go on vacation with my family and my beloved, experience nice, unique food. I miss going for cruises so..yes- cruises .. aiyo, I’m already daydreaming. That’s it..

5. Pretty but fat/Ugly but slim, which one would you prefer?

Pray that he’d be happy with his one.. can’t do much (though heart will ache/bleed/ whatsoever occasionally)

9. If you like to act with someone, who will it be? your gf/bf or an actress/actor?
Actors are more likely though.. so can sharpen my skills

10. Will you invite for Ex bf/gf to your wedding dinner?
Yes I guess.. but will he come? However, if he’s the one who got hurt, I think I should not. Why want to emotionally torture people?

11. How would you see yourself in ten years time?
Someone that has changed for the better..someone very successful in every way of life (ahem…)

Curiosity

Curiosity is killing the cat.
Curiosity is killing me-owwww!

I'm still in the midst of waiting,...and waiting

And I'm really curious.
And I feel that I can't wait anymore.

But I'm telling myself to be patient.. though it's already Thursday!
Are they lying?
Or they've forgotten?
Or my data are still not complete yet?
* no clues at all*

curious, impatiently waiting...

What should I do?

Pictures- Singapore trip

As I've promised earlier- ta daaaaa...!!

Skywalk at Sentosa- you can see nice views from the top.

Luge- it's included in the Skywalk fees $10
To brake, the handles must be pulled towards yourself.
Pretty exciting=D

Upclose of the magnificent Merlion

The Southernmost point of Asia Pacific. I was here!!

In the 'dark room' of Singapore's Bird Park
Various beautiful species of owls can be observed here. No photos are allowed to be taken in this area to prevent the blindness of the owls.

Children's bird show- The macaw knows which bin to throw the correct item! He was heading to the bin for plastic. If birds also know how to recycle...*embarassing, when I think of mankind that failed to do so!* So people, please recycle!!

This white macaw is called Picasso- he can draw modern arts very well.
The pictures are then sold at $10 each, along in a goodies bag containing postcard and a notebook, if I'm not mistaken.

Saw this uniques cassowary- a dinosaur's descendant!

The penguins in the Bird Park. So cute!!

Sigh..my night mode was bad because I was trying to save my battery, which also failed in the end=`(
Anyway, this dark picture showed a fishing cat that actually catches fish in the slow, moving stream. One of the nice views obtained at Night Safari.

That's all..

Next Penang trip

My next Penang trip is tentatively scheduled on 28th October for the whole particular week. It's to the mainland's hospitals.

Wonder if the hotels would be okay.

Will have to arrange for transportation and letters soon.

Hope it'd be enjoying, because I will be going with my boss only. Yes, only her. The other colleague would busy celebrating her Deepavali celebrations in KL.

The data and results collection would be petty, though. Especially if I can't chat with my another colleague. Haih..

Contradictorily, I am kind of excited with this trip also. It could probably be one of my very last few trips to Penang for this year, and maybe next year's.

Changes

Changes..

How do we know if we've changed for the better?

The first step is always the hardest step. Can't it be any simpler?
I am still in the process of setting down my first footprint.

How long will it take?

Sigh...

Singapore trip

Singapore 5th-7th October trip.

It was really a wonderful trip. Again, a new experience for me, despite the last minute preparations for passport, hotel bookings and transportation tickets. Despite the rush, the sadness and the last minute emails that I've received. Thank you very much. Dr. Shen!! If not for you, I would still be here and wondering what the world is that interview for.

The interview was a quick one, lasted me about 10 minutes at most. I remember going in at 9.00 am. But I realised how warm they were. I'm glad about that. After that, I had to rush for application fees payment with the campus's bus, and went to say hallo to my project supervisor. Then I continued with my online application while the huge, clear windows were already presenting clouds that were turning gray. I was like.."please don;t rain until I reach the hotel Puhleesss..." but sigh, it rained in the end. I left my umbrella in my luggage. Yes, I know it will not rain in the hotel, but I took it as a spare item. I've never expected that my last day trip in S'pore would be raining- with all the hot tropical weather. # Lesson 1: Never expect the unexpected will not happen. # Lesson 2: Don't be over confident!

Luckily, I managed to grab some A4-sized brochures from the interview venue and used it as a shade. *Shhhh!!*

After everything had settled in the campus, I walked back to the hotel to meet my aunt. The worst part was that I could not contact her with my cellphone. Whenever I dial her number, the answer would be 'ninety-five". Seven calls- and ALL with the same, short reply. And that was it. I do not know why. Had a hard feeling that probably my credit had finished in 3 days' time. I tried messaging her. Luckily, it worked!!

On the other hand, the weather changed pretty fast somehow. One moment, it was drizzling and after a few bus stops in the campus bus, it started to pour heavily. Somehow, I nearly got lost while looking for the SBS bus terminal. However, I did manage to ask a few friendly and helpful NUS students to confirm the exact stop that I should take and how to get there. Thank you!!

In fact, I'm thankful because it did not rain the day and the day before. Otherwise, I would be seriously disappointed.

Thanks to my cousins who drove to Clementi to meet us up, we had a safe and happy journey to Johor Bahru. It was hassle-free and convenient because the Customs checks were fast. Everything was done in the car=)

The moment my phone line showed Maxis line, I checked my prepaid balance. RM 0.09 left. No wonder I could not call at all. And this gave me another lesson; # Lesson 4: Top up at least RM 60 before going to a foreign country, and especially if you are using a prepaid line.

JB had many nice restaurants, but I could not take anymore pictures because my phone's memory had already exploded with pictures in S'pore. One particular nice bakery where we had hi-tea was Lavender bakery; they sell charcoal-made bread which is really black in colour (yes!!) and tasted quite nice somehow. The charcoal added would help in detoxification- according to the article posted there. Unique isn't it?

I've been trying to upload pictures but I think I have to resize those again. I'll post more pictures of my trip later=)

A day to think over

Tomorrow is Hari Raya Aidilfitri, a celebration celebrated by Muslims after fasting for a month. In fact, the fasting season is a unique season. One can see the reduction of customers in many 'Mamak' stalls and shops, Malay restaurants would close at this time and none of the Muslims will turn up in any restaurants.

This is the month also where you can see 'Pasar Ramadhan', or evening markets where various food and drinks are sold. Really, there are a variety of delicious food around. In fact, I've been advised before that on the first day of this 'Pasar Ramadhan', I should not be buying any food of these stalls because when they are fasting, they wouldn't be able to determine correctly the amount of sugar or salt or whatever ingredients added to make up the food. Neh..as time goes by, if they are good chefs, they would definitely know how much sugar or salt should be added in- thus, it'll not be THAT bad=P, right?

Anyway, today's is the last day for the fasting day and tomorrow would be the celebrations!! I am looking forward to open houses and all, but (*tsk tsk sob sob, I'm coughing and been sick for a week ady!!) haih!!

My sickness is due to infection in upper respiratory tract and also in lower respiratory tract. I am seriously irritated with my coughs and I have a feeling that my cough expectorant is not working at all. What's worse, the preservative of sodium benzoate is quite high (if I'm not mistaken, it is 0.1% v/w). Imagine how much you have consumed if you are taking 10 ml, 3 times a day for 2 weeks? Poisoned... *sob sob*

I have to control my food consumption- cannot be taking too sweet or too spicy food, nor items that are labelled as 'heaty' or oily food. Well, fried food, baked food and any food in deep hot oil are considered heaty- according to older generations.

That's bad, isn't it? That means, in short- I'll be eating tasteless food. *sigh*

Okay, back to my title. I am getting out of topic. *winks*

As the celebrations mood is around, and no one literally is in my office (yes- it's empty!!) I am also in the holiday mood right now. LOL.

So, I am going to pass on my working day less hectic as my previous days- today is a work+ moderate music+internet (a day that I've never had before this).

This is also a day for me to think over my past, what I should do with my future and steps to achieve it. A day for me to think thrice on my relationship with others. Well, a day to do anything that I can think of.

Okay, back to work and music.

Climate Change International Conference 2008

I was really excited and happy when my boss recommended me to become a rapporteur in my first international conference! It was held from 17th-20th September (well, I was kind of late to post this=P)

Finally, I have a glimpse of how international conferences are held and how my work is supposed to be performed. It was an eye-opening experience to me. The way they organised it, how the people worked together and all.

A truly new experience.

The venue was Crowne Plaza Mutiara, Jalan Sultan ismail. It was really a nice hotel. I really liked the ballroom where the conference was held. Check out these pictures!

Bouquet flowers wrapping information

Today is a great weekend! A day that I spent entirely at home, coughing all the way and looking for bouquet wrapping information for my brother.

Found some interesting sites that are quite interesting:

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Bouquet

http://www.kimmiesfloraldesign.com/Services.html

http://www.ehow.com/how_4422302_make-single-flower-bouquet.html

I'm also killing two birds with one stone- looking for my own convocation bouquet. lol. My mom told me to look for the bouquet that I might be interested in, but I really like every single bouquet that I could find online. Well, not all- but majority!

Anyway, I'm still looking for one and thinking which type of flower would suit more. Orchids shouldn't be bad I guess=) If I could have my dreams come true, I would definitely prefer tulips!!

My special day in Penang

Today's the day I officially turn one year old older. *sob sob*
Time is flying fast, and I could only stare ahead and struggling to keep up with the time..

I'm currently staying in one of the hotels along Penang road, and these are some of the pictures that I've captured with my phone camera. I love the scene overlooking the sea. It's just so spectacular!

In fact, this is my 4th visit to Penang within 5 months- solely because I'm working and my work is likely to be based here for at least a week every month. During my stay here, I have traveled to many nearby places through my feet (well, Penang island is really small and you can see many interesting places when walking!)

I enjoy the magnificent sceneries!!

Animal cruelty

The thought of animal cruelty suddenly flashes. I cannot imagine how the future would be if there are more and more demands like this in the future.

I was at a pet shop. Well, it's always my favorite place when I drop by PJ. They have loaded the cages with more pedigree dogs, which include Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Silky Terrier, Boxer and few others. The main attraction was a 2-month-old Boxer that made his business in his cage. Then, he turned to his pile of 'gold' and licked it up again. Ewww.... we were all flabbergasted!

Anyway, there was this family that came to look for a dog. I do not know if the lady was planning to become a breeder or she wanted to show off how mighty her 'money-power' was. She asked the sales representative whether if there are any other colours available for the cute Silky Terrier puppy that we (my family and I) were all admiring. There were three pups there- one black and another two was tan-coloured. This lady then asked whether is there any silver terriers available and when would it come. She said she would not be interested in other colours.

I was dumbstruck. What??!! Are you playing god here? How do they know if there would be any silver, or black or tan-coloured pups coming? Oh, hang on, M'dm. Are you really in the heart of rearing a dog/life, giving it as a gift to your child or are you in the mood of actually planning to venture into pups business? Or, are you in the mood of showing off to some naive-minded people on how special your puppy's coat colour and how exotic it is and how hard to get one? If you're so kind hearted or kind enough to save a life, please, for heaven's sake- don't be so choosy!

If there is a demand for some coat colours, I believe that there would definitely be suppliers too.
Suddenly, this thought of future biotechnology applications with pets' genes came into my mind. They would probably clone some dogs, get some genes, alter it according to a choosy (i******) customer and then have it ready in few months'- just like when you're ordering some customized laptops or pizzas. Haih... ever wonder what would happen to those pups that turned out deformed from gene-altering sections? Would they be put to death immediately? Or left by the roadside and let some other predators have a feast on them?

It's a really sad scene. Why the mentality of these people is so narrow-minded? Is there any differences between rearing a tan-coloured dog and a grey-coated dog? Would it make the tan-coloured dog less acceptable, embarrassing or less obedient?

Even now, with good rules of animal cruelty is around (and, unfortunately, a lack of enforcement), the cruelty of animals is still an ongoing process. What would lie in the future then?

Sob sob....

Toxicity of plastics

Just found this too..

The peak, which is very dark in colour is the most environmental-damaging substance.

Note:
  1. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other halogenated plastics
  2. Polyurethane (PU), Polystyrene (PS), Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), Polycarbonate (PC)
  3. Polyethylene-terephthalate (PET)
  4. Polyolefins (PE,PP, etc.)
  5. Biobased Polymers (Bioplastics)
Which is the worst type? PVC plastic (vinyl) is the worst for both our health and for the environment because it is produced using chlorine, and it releases dioxins throughout its lifetime. Dioxin is cancer causing and is one of the most toxic chemical ever produced. It is very sad to say that the EPA suggests that there is no safe level of dioxin exposure. Also, dioxin is linked to cancer.

Some chemicals such as phthalates are added during the production of PVC as it is hard and cannot be utilised. This can hazardously harm our health when these chemicals leak out very easily from PVCs. Therefore, when young, immunocompromised children suck or bite these plastics (ie toys), they are also indirectly ingesting the harmful chemicals.

So, do take care!

Plastics- ReCyCLe please!!

Recently, I bought two Tupperware water tumblers for my brother and me. In fact, I wanted to buy it for such a long time already but I only managed to recently, after agreeing to joining the line. Prefer it because of its Lifetime Warranty. Anyway, my friend (a researcher) had been telling me about this recycling logo under every plastic ware that you can find- trust me, you might want to know what these logos are with numbers in it.

My friend told me that the higher number, the better is the plastic in maintaining the carbon chain during high or low temperature. It's the best if you could buy plastic containers that is at least numbered 5. Do you know why? Well, the higher is the number, the better is the plastic. The chains that make up the plastic at higher numbers will be stronger and thus, can withstand certain temperatures. Even plastic containers at a lower number (ie no 1) cannot be cooled at a very low temperature because the bonds might be too fragile and break, thus releasing some of the chemical substances into the water stored. This would unfortunately, gulped into our body. The hazardous effects? Cancer is the main concern.

I was looking for more information on this when I came across a few articles that mention about the recycling logos. Check this out!

1 PET (polyethylene terephthalate)– often slightly tinted Soft drinks, water and detergent bottles
2 HDPE (high density polyethylene) Milk, juice, detergents, bleach, shampoo and motor oil bottles, butter tubs and plastic bags
3 PVC (polyvinyl chloride) Food wrap, vegetable oil bottles
4 LDPE (low density polyethylene) Carrier bags and bin liners, coating for milk containers, shrink wrap, dry cleaning bags
5 PP (polypropylene) Microwaveable meal trays, some bags, most bottle tops, some carpets, some food wrappers, yogurt and margarine tubs, drinking straws
6 PS (polystyrene) Throwaway cutlery and containers, coffee cups, egg cartons, meat trays, protective packaging for appliances
7 Other (mixed plastics) No recycling potential (must be landfilled)

Please save our beloved earth and start recycling!
